Buying from Japan can feel confusing when you are doing it for the first time. The challenge is usually not just the language. It is also the mix of store restrictions, shipping options, payment steps, and uncertainty about the real final cost.

In this guide, you will see when you actually need a proxy, how the process works, what costs usually appear, and what to check before you place your order. If you want a quick overview first, you can also read our guide on what proxy buying is.

Why buying from Japan can feel confusing at first

Many Japanese stores still focus on domestic buyers. Some do not ship internationally, some expect a Japan-based address, and some are simply harder to navigate if you are buying from overseas for the first time.

That is why a purchase that looks simple on the product page can become less clear once you think about shipping, payment, and delivery to your country.

This matters even more when you are buying items like figures, cards, games, collabs, or fashion pieces that may be limited, fragile, or hard to replace.

When you actually need a proxy to buy from Japan

You usually need a proxy when the store does not ship to your country, when the seller expects a domestic Japanese address, or when you want one place to handle the buying, receiving, storage, packing, and international shipping steps for you.

If you want to understand that flow in more detail, you can check our How It Works page.

You may not need a proxy every time. Some stores already ship abroad, and sometimes a local seller in your country ends up being close enough in total cost once shipping and possible import charges are included.

That is why it helps to estimate first instead of assuming that importing will always be the better deal.

How buying from Japan with us works

Five-step visual guide showing how to buy from Japan through a proxy, from sending the product link to choosing shipping and making the second paymentFrom product link to international shipment, each step becomes easier when the process is clear.

Step 1: Find the product

Start by finding the item you want in a Japanese online store or marketplace. This could be a figure, a card product, a game, a fashion item, or another product that is easier to buy from Japan.

Step 2: Send the product link

Once you know what you want, send the product link through our platform. We review the link, check availability, and verify whether the item can move forward under our rules, including prohibited-item restrictions when relevant.

Step 3: Review the first payment

Our service works with two payments. The first payment happens after the purchase order is completed and covers the purchase-side costs of your request.

You can also review the main cost structure on our Service Fees page.

Step 4: Wait for the item to arrive at the warehouse

After the purchase is made, the item is sent to our warehouse in Japan. Once it arrives, it is checked and stored until you are ready to move to shipping.

We offer up to 45 days of free storage before extra storage fees apply, and you can also consolidate items before shipment.

Step 5: Choose shipping and complete the second payment

When your item is ready to ship, you choose from the methods available for your package.

The second payment covers the shipping-side costs of the order, and once that step is completed, your package can be prepared for international shipment.

What costs you should expect before placing an order

The clearest way to think about the cost is to separate it into two stages.

First payment

- Product price
- Our service fee
- Domestic shipping inside Japan
- Payment-related fee, when applicable

Second payment

- International shipping
- Packing material costs
- Optional extra services, when requested
- Payment-related fee, when applicable

Our service fee is ¥240 per product, and we separate domestic shipping, international shipping, and packing costs so you can understand where each part of the total comes from.

For a more detailed breakdown, you can check our Service Fees page.

There are also costs that are not included in our service fees. Import taxes, customs duties, and other charges applied by your country are your responsibility as the buyer.

How payment works with us

With us, payment happens in stages rather than all at once. That is why you review one payment for the purchase side and another for the shipping side.

Always check the charge in front of you, confirm what that stage covers, and review the total before paying. If you use Wallet, use the payment option shown in your account for that specific charge as the source of truth.

The same principle applies to estimates. Our Cost Calculator helps you plan before you order, but the final charge is confirmed during the actual process after the relevant details are checked.

Quick Estimate is useful for a fast ballpark figure, while Precise Estimate is better when you want a more accurate plan before moving forward.

How shipping is chosen and what can change the final cost

Shipping is not fixed the same way for every order. The available methods depend on destination, package size, weight, and current carrier conditions.

That means a small card product and a boxed figure can lead to very different shipping results even when the item value looks similar.

A lighter package may qualify for smaller-package options, while a larger or more fragile item can change the balance between price, speed, and protection.

This is exactly why estimating first helps. Instead of guessing, you can compare the available options based on the kind of package you are actually planning to ship with our Cost Calculator.

Why using a cost calculator first helps

Our Cost Calculator gives you two paths.

Quick Estimate is meant for a fast ballpark figure when you know the approximate weight and total value.
Precise Estimate is recommended for more accurate planning and lets you enter more detailed information.

That makes the calculator useful for more than just getting a number. It helps you compare options, understand whether the purchase still makes sense after shipping, and decide whether to move forward now, wait, or consolidate later.

When it may not be worth importing from Japan

Importing is not always the best move.

It may not be worth it when the item is cheap but the shipping is relatively high, when the product is bulky or fragile for your budget, when the same item is already available locally for a similar total, or when the shipping timing does not fit what you need.

Sometimes the better decision is to wait, consolidate, or buy locally. Starting with an estimate helps you make that decision with more context and less guesswork.

What to do next

If you already found the item you want, the best next step is to estimate your costs first.

That gives you a clearer view of the likely shipping options, the possible total, and whether the order still makes sense for your budget.

If the estimate looks good and you are ready to move forward, send the product link and begin your order.

That way, you enter the process with a much clearer idea of what you are paying for and what happens next. You can also review how the process works before taking the next step.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always need a proxy to buy from Japan?

No. Some stores already ship internationally. A proxy is most useful when the store only works domestically or when you want help with receiving, storing, packing, and shipping the order.

What costs should I expect before ordering?

Most orders involve two payments: one for the purchase side and one for the shipping side. Import duties and local customs charges are separate and depend on your country. You can review the main structure on our Service Fees page.

Can I use Wallet to pay with us?

Use the payment options shown in your account for the specific charge you are paying.

How do I know which shipping method is available?

The available methods depend on destination, package size, weight, and current carrier conditions. The applicable options appear when your package is ready to ship or when you run an estimate with our Cost Calculator.

Do I have to pay customs duties or import taxes?

Possibly. These charges depend on your country’s rules and are the buyer’s responsibility.

When is importing from Japan not worth it?

Usually when shipping makes the total disproportionate, when the timing does not work for you, or when a similar local option ends up close in final cost. An estimate helps you see that sooner.
